Desert Splendor

Reservations must be made with the Guest Coordinator before making a payment. Answers to many of your questions will likely be found on this page. To check availability of housing, to make reservations, or to obtain additional information about Desert House of Prayer, please contact our guest coordinator. We are open to guests from mid-August through June, but not during July and early August when we schedule our major repairs and maintenance.

When you request reservations we will send you a letter detailing expenses and payment methods, as well as our arrival and check-out policies. After completing the reservation process with the Guest Coordinator, please mail a check or money order in US dollars to the address below or return to this page to make payment using the PayPal button at the bottom of this page.

Room Description and Rates:
We have nine rooms equipped with a full or queen size bed, desk, recliner, chest of drawers, closet, and private bathroom with shower. A tenth room has the same amenities, but with two twin beds instead of a full or queen. Each room is climate controlled and is on the ground floor with a private entrance from the outside. Each room has a window above the desk and a six-foot-wide glass sliding door providing ample sunlight and views, front and back, of the natural desert. Bed and bath linens, as well as soap, are provided. To keep down costs and to allow for maximum privacy, no room service is provided once a guest checks into her or his space. Normal check-out time is 10 am, noon on Sundays. Retaining the room beyond check-out time results in a charge for an extra night unless approved by staff in advance. NOTE: Off-peak rate during May, June, and from August 1 to October 15 is $10 less per night. This discount applies to stays of 1 to 29 nights only and does not apply to the weekend package or non-overnight room/hermitage use fees. Retreatants staying 30 or more nights are asked to help with simple tasks.

Hermitage Description and Rates:
We have four hermitages (casitas), each equipped with a queen size bed, table and chairs, recliner, closet, small kitchen sink, cooking facilities, and private bathroom with tub and shower. Each hermitage is a climate controlled self-contained building with two picture windows and a twelve-foot side glass sliding door that opens directly out onto the desert. Normal check-out time is 10 am, noon on Sundays. Retaining a hermitage beyond check-out time results in a charge for an extra night unless approved by staff in advance. Special Dietary Needs:
Every effort is made to provide wholesome and balanced meals. If you are on a special diet, we can provide some special foods (e.g.: gluten-free bread, soy milk). There is a variety of foods served at each meal allowing for adequate choices to satisfy most guests’ dietary needs. For more detailed information about our meal service, please contact our guest coordinator.

Spiritual Direction:
Trained spiritual directors are available to meet with guests.

Fees for Non-overnight Visits:
Guests are welcome to use our common areas (chapel, library, and community room) at no charge. There is a charge for any meals eaten in our dining room. Guests not staying overnight may, if they wish, rent a room or hermitage for day use, but space may not be reserved longer than five days in advance. The latest possible check-out time for non-overnight use is 7 pm.

Off-Peak Rates:
Our off-peak rate during May and June, and from August 1 to October 15 is $10 less per night. Retreatants staying 30 or more nights are asked to help with simple tasks. NOTE: We are closed each year from July 1 to mid-August.

Weekend Package Rates:
We offer a weekend package that gives retreatants the following: one night in a room or hermitage, plus 1 breakfast, 2 lunches, and 2 dinners. That is, check in in the morning, stay one night, and check out by no later than 7 pm the following day. You can start on a Friday or on a Saturday.

To Make a Payment:
Reservations must be made by contacting the Guest Coordinator’s office. You will be given the exact dollar amount for your stay with us and the amount to be sent in advance, as a deposit. Your reservation is confirmed upon payment of the deposit. We accept credit and debit cards in person, over the phone, and by clicking on the button below. Enter the deposit amount without using a dollar sign and then follow prompts to complete the transaction. Follow the same procedure to send subsequent payments. You need not have a PayPal account to use this feature.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
Deposits are non-refundable. However, if you cancel at least 48 hours in advance of your expected arrival time, the deposit can be applied to a future retreat. Any payment beyond the required deposit will be refunded.

NOTE: Retreatants may not book rooms or hermitages for non-overnight use longer than five days in advance. Checkout time is 10AM Monday through Saturday, noon on Sundays. In some cases, with advance permission of the guest coordinator, retreatants might be granted a two-hour grace period.  Any overnight guest who retains a room or hermitage past 11AM without special permission will be charged an additional night whether or not they intend to stay longer. To assure maximum privacy and silence, we do not provide room service; retreatants are welcome to wash their own sheets and towels, if desired, at $1 per load.
